Red Velvet Cake
2 cups self rising flour | ![]() |

Cream oil and sugar together until blended. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Add food color and cocoa, mix well. Add vanilla to buttermilk. Alternate flour and buttermilk into sugar and eggs, mixing well. Beat until smooth. Lastly, add the vinegar and mix. Pour into two 8" or 9" round well greased and floured cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 25-30 minutes until done. (The bottom layer follows this recipe; the top layer was made by adding red food coloring to a devil's food cake mix.) Our cake was frosted with buttercream frosting and covered in rolled fondant, but the more traditional frosting is below:
Cream Cheese Frosting
8 oz. cream cheese Cream butter and cheese together, add vanilla. Beat in sugar and blend
until smooth. Add nuts if desired and mix well.
